Volumes have been already written over the problem of Kashmir.
The net is overflowing with columns explaining Kashmir problem
from various perspectives. The two nuclear rivals (India
and Pakistan) are using the Net to press their rival claims on Kashmir, the
cause of two wars between them since independence from Britain in 1947.
News of the Indian army's campaign to evict Pakistan-backed guerrillas perched
on India's side of the cease-fire line dividing Kashmir are available in a
"Kargil Update" on the official website of the Indian armed forces, available through the
National Informatics Center (http://www.nic.in/).
India says the infiltrators are a mix of foreign mercenaries and Pakistani soldiers,
but Pakistan says they are freedom fighters to whom it gives diplomatic support. "No sane person can believe that such well-equipped and trained intruders could
simply be a group of ragtag mujahideen operating at altitudes varying from 15,000
to 19,000 feet (4,570 meters to 5,800 meters)," the website of the Indian army
said in its section entitled, "Truth about Kashmir".
However, the "truth" about Kashmir takes a different hue on Pakistan's official site
(http://www.pak.gov.pk/), which describes South Asia as a "nuclear flashpoint."
The website talks of mercenaries in Kashmir, but the reference is to the Indian
army. "The state of Jammu and Kashmir is under brutal subjugation of 600,000 Indian
mercenaries, who are licensed to kill by the Indian government," it states.
"In the last 10 years, 60,000... innocent people have been mercilessly butchered to
death by India in the occupied Kashmir."
Another Indian site, http://www.armyinkashmir.org/, chronicles incidents of guerrilla
attacks in the two-thirds of Kashmir that India rules.
The Pakistan-based Kashmir Liberation Cell showcases alleged human rights violations in Indian-ruled Kashmir on its http://www.kashmir.org/ site.
Pakistan denies Indian charges that it arms guerrillas in Kashmir but acknowledges
moral and diplomatic support.
India rejects Pakistani charges of large-scale human violations in Kashmir and in
turn accuses guerrillas of targeting innocent civilians.
